Agrupamento de Escolas de Rio Tinto
EB23 Rio Tinto has 900 students & 90 teachers(6 special education+2 psychologists). The curricula for the 5-9thgraders(10-15 yo): Portuguese, Maths, Science, Chemistry, Geography, History, English, French, Spanish, Arts, PE, Music & Citizenship in individual tutoring & mixed ability classes with inclusive education pupils. We prepare students for the 9th grade national exams that allow them to access secondary/professional school.
The school offers after classes clubs in the following areas: sports, arts, drama, citizenship, multimedia, astronomy & robotics, writing, first aid, civil protection & environment. It is situated in a problematic urban area with some community neighbourhoods where drugs & poverty are a reality. The social level is low as most parents didn’t complete basic elementary education & live on social welfare while others work in the services sector. Many students come from broken, one-parent or problematic families,so they don’t expect much from life or school. Our main objective is to prevent dropout & show these teenagers alternative life paths, educating them to be reliable citizens & providing them with the basic knowledge that makes them feel part of the UE.
Our motivation to join this project is the fact that it addresses this group especially because of their low level of basic skills (literacy in mother's language, mathematics & science, & foreign languages). We want our pupils to be involved in European projects, motivating them through culture, broadening their horizons by getting them in touch with international peers, so that they learn skills that enables them to get work anywhere in the world without being the target of social exclusion. Additionally we hope to enhance their cultural awareness, general knowledge,self-confidence,creativity,ICT & English skills. The majority of these students have never left their living area or travelled abroad. To know the other partners' national heritage is a process that will allow them to increase their skills in today’s societies.
