The name of our school is İbrahim Süheyla İzmirli High School of Science which is named after a late benefactor Ibrahim İzmirli, 2015. Our school began to provide education in 2013-2014 academic year. Until 2015 our school suffered from the lack of necessary facilities. As of now we have 396 students whose age range is between 14 and 18. 27 teachers and a headmaster and three deputy principles have been working in our school. Our school is situated in Kırmacı District in Ereğli/Zonguldak and 2 kilometres away from city center. The main distinctive feature of our school is that it is highly prestigious school due to its academic success at university entrance exam both at national and international level.
The students who are admitted to our school have to be at least in 97th percentile at a high stakes test called LGS which is carried out to select the students to be admitted to prestigious schools like ours.Some of our students are in the USA for university education and some who are receiving their university education have passed Erasmus exam and now they are having their education in countries such as Brazil. In addition to high academic success, cultural and sportive activities are emphasized.Visits to universities are carried out within Turkey and abroad. Last summer holiday, some volunteer students took part in the cultural expedition in London which was organized by our school and they had chance to practise English and experience a different culture in situ. Additionally, students have started to organize province-wide Model United Nations – MUN-. Students also take part in sports competitions and win medals. To name a few, our students became champion last year at fencing contest in Zonguldak (2015). Our students became the champion at the chess tournament last year-Zonguldak. Our school conducted Erasmus project titled ‘Humanity has no borders’. The teachers who are in the European projects group are the key people in charge of running the project.
The vision of our school is to equip our students with 21st century skills and in this regard, we are to provide learning, literacy and life skills. Primary focus is on critical thinking ability and collaboration. Additionally, we aim to foster self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-regulation. The students will develop cultural awareness and intercultural competence. Being sensitive to the needs and values of the local and international cultures is one of the primary aims.Universal design for learning which is in ascendancy and task-based learning and project-based learning are applied to enable the students to challenge the modern world requirements.
